Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System

MS4

A municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) is a drainage system owned by a municipality, in this case the City of Greenville, that carries stormwater runoff away from buildings, roads, and other development to alleviate flooding. The drainage system is comprised of:

  • Catch basins
  • Curbs
  • Ditches
  • Gutters
  • Man-made channels
  • Municipal streets
  • Roads with drainage systems
  • Storm drains

This system is separate from the sanitary sewer system that carries sewage away from homes, schools, businesses, and other institutions.
